Lip Dub ? YES or NO

LipDub, a video that combines lip synching and audio dubbing to make a music video, but this is just a definition as the name suggest. In actual it’s a concept which has originated from USA where the students of schools and colleges represent their life at their institution through a choreograph dance video. This is also used to promote and Market the institution. From here this concept was spread to other parts of the world and recently and unfortunately or fortunately (yet to be decided by the readers) it has landed in Karachi, Pakistan.

The first LipDub video was of a private university and now the rehearsals are going to start in our University. Question arises that is LipDub ethically correct in our society?

A society which is developing, and going toward modernization through adoption of foreign elements which the develop countries posses. Today our society is on a level where it’s deciding that what are the things which are to be adopted and what are the things which do not adjust in our own social and religious norms. In this state of instability an education institution should be very careful in adopting a foreign element to represent itself to a society, where this element is consider as controversial.

Today our youth has might become ignorant, may be it’s a strong word to be use and the word is not used to represent the youth as total but just for entertainment we are forgetting a fact that we are going to represent a University of “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” through a dance video.

May be the reason is that, that the entertainment has been wiped from the university and students are taking it as an opportunity of entertainment and in doing so, student are not realizing the image which they will create.

Institutions do need to market themselves but; institutions are known for their quality of education and opinion of Market for the institution and their graduates, therefore a promotion campaign should highlight that the institution is able to provide these factors and all the facilities which facilitate the cause. But if a LipDub is used as an element to represent the university then there is a big question that what audience we are targeting? Certainly a student with good academic background will not see it as a value added element and what about the parents? Parents always want the institution to only provide education with the university fulfilling all the ethical norms but this dance video will not help the cause.

Certainly no one is against entertainment but this is not entertainment although this all campaign is sugar coated as an entertainment thing but it’s more a representation of us. So do we want to represent ourselves in this form? I leave the answer for my readers to judge and answer it.

This article is one way of looking to LipDub video, reader sure can have a different opinion regarding this but before going into this just relax, measure this event with your social and ethical meters and then jump into or out of it.
