HNMUN ‘13
(A step ahead)

Every year Harvard University organizes a model united nation (MUN) to create the sprite of diplomacy among the students in the same way that is practiced in United Nations. This year, it was the fifty-Ninth Session of HNMUN (Harvard National Model United Nation) and Bahria University got the honor to attend the session from Pakistan along with 47 other nations which has Participated in HNMUN.

The Delegation of Bahria University comprises of seven students from Karachi campus, four students from Islamabad campus and Sir Khalid Mumtaz as the Head Delegate. The delegates are thankful to the Director General Bahria University, Vice Admiral Khalid Amin and Director, Captain Mohsin H. Malik for sending the delegation from Bahria university to this prestigious event. Delegates also shows their appreciation to Student Resource Center (Mr. Raza Abbas, Mr. Awais Mehmood and Ms. Sehrish Khan) for its support.

The experience of HNMUN added a new dimension in delegates' academic and social learning. HNMUN exposed the students from Bahria Univesity to the students of the other universities from all around the globe and gave the opportunity to represent the soft image of Pakistan and help establish international links with the students of other universities.

HNMUN help the delegates understand the power of diplomacy and how diplomacy can be used to convey the objectives to the world and how diplomatic foreign relation can help a nation’s image and its recognition in the international arena. The delegates realized that students of Pakistan can make a big positive difference in the image of Pakistan and they should get continuous opportunities to represent Pakistan in such international events and conferences.

During HNMUN the delegates realized that the students of Bahria University stand equal to any other student of international universities. But when it comes to HNMUN, the only difference between the delegations of other universities and Bahria University’s delegation was that there was lacking of processes and procedures that the other delegates had gone through to attend this event.

While attending the ending ceremony of HNMUN and watching different universities names on the screen as they won different delegate awards because of their performance in their respective committees, the delegation realized that it was just the absence of processes and procedures which restricted the Bahria University’s delegation putting up the name of their university in the winners list. These procedures were missed by both the university management and the students who were the part of the delegation.

International Universities which participates in HNMUN goes through different procedures before sending their delegates to this event, for example they have a MUN group in their university which create same event in their university internally and from there they screen out students to be the part of the delegation which have to attend HNMUN. In addition to it, after the selection of delegates, the delegates   are given training for two or three months where the delegates work on the committee topics and get prepare on it, that how they have to use diplomacy to put out their objectives and win the agreement of other delegates in the same committee. When it comes to the students of the delegation, they understand the scale and canvas of HNMUN. Apart of other entertainment in Boston they understand that their prime objective is to win delegate award in their respective committee and they do it with complete sincerity and conviction because they have it as their aim and for that they were trained by their University. They have the sense of responsibility that they are representing their Nation and University and their goal is to bring back pride for their university. During HNMUN, head delegate also play an important role, although the delegation comprises of senior students but still they are students and it’s a responsibility of the head delegate to keep them align and force them to focus on the event. These were the few examples of the procedures which the international Universities and their delegate go through and win awards for their universities.

Unfortunately Bahria University and its delegation lack in few of the procedures and this is the reason that Bahria University instead of participating in HNMUN for the third or fourth time still didn’t have any awards yet.

But this time this cloud have a silver lining, apart from the deficiencies of procedures the delegation is able to bring back few achievements. The delegation tried its best to make its presence felt, the delegates were able to build good international links with the students and head delegate. Thet went into discussion to understand the procedures and processes the foreign students have gone through for the preparation of HNMUN. The delegation through its experience have learned that what are the key processes that can win the award for the university and what are the deficiencies which need to be overcome.

Therefore, although the delegation didn’t bring back any award but it has bring back the experience, knowledge and skills which will help the university and the next delegation win the best delegate award next time and that’s why this delegation has brought a little success for its university and together the university and the delegation have a step ahead toward achieving the award. This success can only can be materialized in the form of award for the next time if the Bahria University use this delegation’s experience to prepare its next delegation for HNMUN 2014.
